Tacoma Battled Hard But Falls To Skagit Valley
MOUNT VERNON, Wash. — Tacoma (0-4, 0-0) fell to Skagit Valley College (1-2, 0-0), 66-55, despite holding a 10-point lead in the second quarter. Skagit Valley capitalized with 32 points in the paint and 33 points from the bench to secure the victory.
The game began with Lanasha Lacy of Tacoma committing a turnover, setting the stage for a competitive first quarter. Skagit Valley's Grace Trichler scored the first points with a layup at 9:20, while Tacoma responded with a jumper from Ikunaday Filipe at 8:09 to tie the score at 2-2. Skagit Valley pulled ahead with Karlee Ayers' 3-pointer at 7:27, giving them a 5-2 lead. Tacoma battled back, with Laney Green contributing a layup and a 3-pointer, bringing Tacoma within one point at 12-11 with 2:37 remaining. Despite Tacoma's effort to close the gap, the Cardinals maintained a narrow advantage, finishing the quarter leading 16-13.
Tamairah Allen and Jasmeen Kaur led a scoring surge for TCC in the second quarter, propelling them to a 35-27 lead over Skagit Valley by halftime. Allen opened with a 3-pointer at 9:10, assisted by Kaur, and later added a layup to extend the lead. Kaur also contributed significantly, hitting a 3-pointer at 5:25 and assisting on Lanasha Lacy's 3-pointer with just six seconds remaining in the quarter. Skagit Valley's Arianne Derrickson kept the game competitive with a late layup, but TCC's offensive efficiency, including eight field goals and four 3-pointers, proved decisive in the quarter.
Skagit Valley overcame a nine-point deficit to take control in the third quarter, outscoring Tacoma 16-7. With 8:00 remaining, Kiki York's 3-pointer, assisted by Grace Trichler, cut Tacoma's lead to five. Laney Green extended Tacoma's lead to nine with a layup at 6:37, assisted by Filipe, but Skagit Valley responded with an 11-0 run. Allie Heino's layup at 3:27 gave Skagit Valley their first lead of the quarter. Jocelyn Wirch's steal in the final seconds ensured Skagit Valley maintained their advantage heading into the final quarter.
Skagit Valley secured a commanding 66-55 victory over TCC. The fourth quarter was marked by Skagit Valley's strong performance in the paint, highlighted by Arianne Derrickson's layup at 3:00, pushing their lead to 59-49. Tacoma's efforts were bolstered by Filipe, who scored a 3-pointer with 1:53 remaining, narrowing the gap to 64-55. However, Skagit Valley maintained their momentum, with Alyssa Larson sealing the win with a layup in the final 12 seconds.
