NWAC Championship, MVP, Most Inspirational for Titan Men's Soccer
November 13, 2016
Ranked second in the Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC) West Region, Tacoma Community College's Men's Soccer team pulled off a stunning upset this weekend, defeating NWAC East Region first place team Spokane to win the championship Sunday night at Starfire Stadium in Tukwila. The win was a back-to-back upset for the Titans, who beat the NWAC's top-ranked Peninsula College team to advance from the semi-finals Nov. 5.
Titan Head Coach Jason Gjertsen was unable to attend the championship match due to medical issues. The team was coached by Interim Head Coach PJ Vargas, assisted by TCC Women's Soccer Coach Jill Green and by Jason Prenovost, TCC Athletics Director and the NWAC's all-time winningest Men's Soccer coach.
"Jason was unable to attend the games, but he led the team meetings and preparation," said Prenovost. "He did an incredible job putting the team in position to be successful. Jason showed incredible humility, poise and guidance. This championship isn't won without his leadership."
The last time TCC won the Men's Soccer Championship, in 2000, the team featured Jason Gjertsen and PJ Vargas as players.
"It's pretty special that they won both as players and coaches" said Prenovost.
Titan keeper Evan Munn was named NWAC Men's Soccer MVP, and midfielder Dario Semadeni was named Most Inspirational Player.
"This truly is a Championship in which the entire TCC family has been a part," said Prenovost. "I love these students and coaches and appreciate all the support we have had from our campus community!"
